    hello folks,

I got a hold of some nice Mysore and I believe a have a good connect for some deer musk grains. Can anyone share with me the details of creating your own musk attar, such as how much musk per ml, how long to let it macerate, techniques, etc.?

    Dear SydnorIII,
You'll find a video in this article, where Abdullah (of Mellifluence AA) shows how he does his deer musk maceration.
Brother @Rai Munir is probably the man to seek help from. For detailed discussion, see this thread.
I might need your assistance soon too re musk attar/maceration so that I can do better learning from experiences of you and others.

Somewhat related: IIRC, you bought Russian Oud recently. How are you liking the combo of oud+s.musk in it?

Well, "How much musk per ml?' depends upon your personal thirst for the Musk aroma. One thing for sure, I simply negate that even a gram in two tola Sandal oil is enough. Talking about Oud is a more than complex equation where emergence of Musk note is rather difficult. Sandal is created for Musk. But Mysore Sandal. I have a lot of macerations in different Sandal oils. I mean region wise, and found just Mysore is the only Sandal suits Musk.

"How long to macerate?" solely depends upon the amount of grains. Of course, if 0.3 gram grains are to be macerated in 20 ml Sandal, a year is too less span to have true Musk aroma. Heating is another topic whether the maceration is to be heated or not. I WILL GO FOR 'NOT HEATING' AT ALL if someone wants 'Musk as such''; otherwise, the 'aroma of heating' would creep into the Musk note, if heated a lot. I am of the view that heating is an unnatural method to speed up dissolving grains. So, either patience or pretty enough grains in pretty less oil will do.

I think in the video, 0.3 gram grains were macerated in 20 ml Australian Sandal. If I listened to the voice correctly, for me, the outcome will be 'sandal+sandal+sandal+musk' aroma. Second, with that much less amount of grains, heating, to certain extent, becomes compulsory.

Respected Ashfaque has posted a link. Excellent information present there. But, there are places where I stopped to compare my findings, and found 'different', if not clashing.

Respected SydnorIII, if you want Musk, then 'amount of grains' counts. The most important thing: Musk aroma doesn't last for hours. But its first kiss is all that stays with the wearer forever.

People talk about tincture, and I never ever tried that. Not due to religious factor, but the smell of ethanol. So, my love for the Musk never let me do this unromantic venture.

I am writing an article for the Forum, and I will write about my findings.

@Ashfaque thank you very much for the information. As far as russian musk goes, I absolutely love it...oudy, gourmand, musky!
@Rai Munir thank you very much for your thoughts. i do not plan on messing with the natural maceration process through heating. honestly, if anything i would be worried about putting too much musk in too little sandal, if that is even a possible thing in the eyes of a musk lover :)

Below is the picture of half of the macerations I have at the moment. Musk in different oils/ blends, including Sandal, Rose, Oud. Different amount of grains in different amount of the same oils/blends.

First three (right to left), you will see a 3 gram bottle, and then two sample vials. 3 gram bottle is having a lot of musk grains in almost 2 gram Sandal. Just after two hours, the oil had changed its colour. Why? Amount of grains. And aroma is so strong. Next there is a sample vial having Tibetan grains in Mysore Sandal. Just see the colour. The next sample vial is again having Tibetan Musk in Mysore Sandal. Why two? The Tibetan Musk I got from two different sources; so, I want to study the differences in aroma, colour, and time. The rest of vials are having Musk or Musks and Rose, Oud, Jasmine, Coffee beans, etc. And one vial you see (the third one from left to right) reads 'Am...'; it is Ambra by EO. I blended Mysuru Santal from IO, Ambra from EO, some drops from a six month old Siberian Musk maceration, and a drop of Jasmine Absolute, and a light swipe of Musk Rose Musk maceration.

You can see the amount of grains in each vial or bottles. Even then, I am saying that for a strong and true Musk aroma, grains, grains, and just grains are to be added.

    Hi all,

I recently purchased a gram of musk grains that I intend to macerate in Australian or Mysore Sandalwood oil. I wanted some suggestions on how best to do it. Is there any benefit to grinding the grains either alone or with a small amount of oil prior to full maceration?

What are the pros and cons of heat? Any other tips?

    Many thanks,

    Marwan

I still have a hard time with the idea of extracting musk into sandalwood!

Don’t take my comment the wrong way. This may be the best way to extract, this may be a traditional scent combination people have come to love... Not saying it isn’t a fine thing to do if you like it, but for me personally sandalwood is too “heavy a blanket” - it just kills all the top notes of musk that (for me) make it special. I can see the resonance of the two fragrances, but when I try macerating or even just layering they do not work well together and I find the result is less than the parts separately. I have tried every kind of sandalwood, and pretty high concentrations of musk. I think I will always prefer a straight tincture. The only type of sandalwood that (to my nose) blended harmoniously was some Australian santalum spicatum. I kid you not - if I had no choice but to extract musk into sandalwood, I would use the Australian.

I also don’t like mixing sandalwood with oud for the same reason. The sandalwood just damps things down.

Now musk and oud is another story. That can be an EPIC combination with the right oud and the right balance of intensity. To me, this is a great combo (though not a good presentation of musk in itself - this is just a very nice simple perfume).
