I read somewhere that oud oil can be kept for 6 years, has any person here kept oud oil for many years if so in what conditions? Like room temperature? I have never kept oud oul for years but I wonder if it matures?

There is no shelf life really, we have seen many Oud oils sold 20 years plus aged. If anything age helps the scent to mature and rounds off any rough edges over time. Room temp is fine away from direct sunlight. I dont think there will ever be a best before date on Oud....hope not :D

For Oud, the more aged, the better. At least it is what is acknowledged in the community till today.

If at all I want to preserve some oils for more than three years, I won't keep the oils in bottles with plastic dipstick at all.

I guess brother Rai Munir is right. 150 year old kalakassi oil is so refined and elegant. But I think only 6 or 7% is actually very old oil and the remaining is not so old. Some oils do get thicker because of oxidation.

Yes .. just like the 80 year old kalakassi ASQ sells, the stock just never seems to end! ;)

Anywho, nice to see someone else on here from Kuwait. I'm guessing from your display picture Ahmed

I think it's oxidation and also due to vaporization of the water inside. Also natural oil constists of very complex components that degrade and brake over time and that also influences the smell. I dont think it smells necessarily better, just different over time. Correct me if I am wrong :)

With the 150 & 80 year ones...I’ve wondered if that is the age of the trees, or the time since distillation...

I have found that what oud oil gains in dignity and depth as it ages, it loses in complexity and individual personality. I believe in general that older oud becomes more similar as the “old oud” note takes over. My experience is very limited so I am not sure how accurate this observation is. My sample vials all end up smelling more or less the same after a while and I end up throwing them out.
