so I just turned 50, I was given some money with the directive that it wasn’t to be used for home repair or tuition, but was given on condition it was used to get something I wouldn’t otherwise. Family are wonderful.

It was a tough call, but given the options on hand, I had to go for the super hoi-an. I am really impressed by this oil. Its longevity on skin is excellent, and the dry down is very rich and oud-y. It has the wonderful carrot seed sweetness of some other oils originating from Chinese wood, Hong Kong, Vietnam, etc. it has that bittersweet dignified note that a few of the Rikkoku set woods in my set have. There is definitely a fermentation/soak note, but it is not a distraction to me and this is like a nice fusion of two styles I enjoy.

Maybe I haven’t smelled enough oils from Vietnam but I was quite surprised to smell all these rich oud notes in an oil at this price point. I thought I’d have to drop $500+ on a bottle to get this well defined a Chinese oud. I don’t want to say it smells like kyara or kinam for obvious reasons, but it is one of just a few ouds in my collection that reminds me of those scents. The others are the ceen oils from ASO, Royal Kinam from oriscent, and the hainan / Chinese samples I have sniffed from imperial oud.

I just can’t believe I get to have a full bottle of this stuff! I am overjoyed - first full bottle of a luxury oud in a long time.

I see you take well to a good barn,
Welcome to the club!:Poop::D

Don’t find it barn-y! This surprises me.... but I think I know the note you refer to. I see it as more swampy/anaerobic. Maybe I’m misconceiving this adjective? Need to apply another dab...

Barny in the “umbrella statement” kind of way.
Just ask Rasoul, he can detect anything even remotely soaked from a mile away:Roflmao::Roflmao::Roflmao:

According to Faizal, it was a very clean soak in a copper pot.

Yes, Super Hoi-an is not outright barny, but the soak does make it delicious to me.

Respected Oudamberlove, what is meant by 'clean soak', and what is the link between soaking in copper pot and barnyard shade? At the moment, I got soaking in a copper pot creates different barnyard, and soaking in a steel pot creates different.

Thanks

Hello dear Rai, I believe a clean soak to be soak that is not allowed to ferment, grow moldy, and to rot.

You are correct in stating that the container used for the soak, will impart a different barny element.
I don’t know the exact outcome, because the variables of agarwood used, soaking liquid used, length of soak, and temperature, will all come into play.

In this video, Russian Adam uses copper, teak, and a clay pot for soaking, but I don’t remember where I read the results. Probably at his website.

Oudamberlove is spot on about the clean soak. Supe Hoi An was soaked for about 10 days in clay pots then cooked in a small copper pot. The clay pot soak and copper bring out a beautiful "barn" note in this oil.

I'm just so jazzed I have a bottle of this coming in the mail! The last few bottles I've purchased have been in the $50 - $85 price range (in other words, cultivated Thai oil of questionable quality).

I see folks here buying bottle after bottle after bottle of high grade oud oil... can't help but be jealous and now I cannot help be be ecstatic over this purchase of my own. It will probably be another few years before my next acquisition... this is really the first oil I've smelled in a while where I felt it would be a mistake not to buy it. Thanks again for the chance to add this to my stash.

This oil is really well balanced. The fermented note somehow creates a sweet bitter red-ginseng richness in the top note that is quite interesting. There’s a warm herbal “fuzzy” middle note stage - I prefer very small dabs of this oil because this stage can swamp the top and base note, and plays better when applied moderately. The dry down is rich oudy sweet and mineral clean Vietnamese resin scent, mixed with a bright white wood kyara scent.

Well that depends - very long time on fabric of course. I find the base to extend quite long, and it stays clean/ fresh oudy all the way to the end. I feel it is of above average duration on skin, though some other ouds stay stronger for longer. If I apply a swipe at night on my wrist, I can faintly smell the aroma the next morning. The residue is very nice and clean sweet Aquilaria sinensis scent. The base note of this oil is a strong point.

It sure feels like receiving a treasure when you are finally able to buy a bottle of fine oud.
I have two bottles so far and I always open them with great fondness.

I received a sample of Super Hoi An and it is one of the loveliest ouds I have tried. I don't even mind the smokiness (it feels more so than barny) anymore. It adds to the addictive charm. Will post more impressions after I wear it some more.

I am sure you will enjoy it. It is balanced which means that you can enjoy it many times without getting tired of it. It took me a few swipes to fully appreciate it but it won me over eventually. Hope it is the same for you.
And welcome to the forum!
Might I inquire the name of the artist of your avatar? The art seems familiar but lost in depths of my memory ;)

Also...are you PersonelHigh? Judging from the avatar...

That sucks but at least now you return with an even more cool avatar and name.

Yeah I got the same vibes from the art so figured it must be you! Glad to have you back. Tried any good ouds lately?

I'm impressed by your eye that you can see from 2 different images a relation. I've been on hiatus. I made some chocolate incense. I have to figure out how to offset the extreme nature of my fragrant spendings so.. this incense.. But I'm back in the mood for oud.

Haha not that hard.
Actually just seeing the picture the thought popped up. Probably because of the "occult" vibes of both. So I checked the profile remembering that you were from Hawaii.

Ah fragrance spending habits...I thought making my own incense would also help (made a really mysterious smelling one with lichen and spruce resin)....but here I am. Please tell me more of your chocolate incense...intrigued.

I will try to remember where I saw the picture...I know I have seen it before.
