The year 2021 is going to say goodbye, but the fragrances I am blessed with this year would keep echoing. ‘detouring from the old tracks’ and ‘hewing out some new paths’ led me to some precious sources of oils. Known artisans to ‘unknown artisans’! I love this odyssey. Acquiring oils from the first source, creating attars and distilling small batches- all made me UN-LEARN a good many views, which proved themselves to be broken images, if not taboos.
1. Craft Oud (Dr. Parasun)
Kalakassi
Oud and Mysore Sandal Supreme! Pure and genuine Mysore among so many oils and Kalakassi is a wonderfully elegant Hindi Kalakassi with a slight touch of Ceylon pungency. Kakojan by the artisan is worth-mentioning oil as it diverted my mind to its being an Agar Aura Oud oil. That particular signature of Agar Aura I sensed in CO’s Oud oils, but Kalakassi is a class, and carries purely ‘Parasun-ian’ signature. If Kakojan had less white wood, it would have surely been at par with Habz Oud’s Al Jannah. The house offered different batches of beautiful Mysore Sandal oil, but one batch didn’t smell Mysore to me. When I discussed the matter with Dr. Parasun, he not only listened to me carefully and without losing temper, but seconded my humble opinion as well. Here I have to refer to Vetiver Supreme too. I had quit acquiring Indian Vetiver oils due their ever declining quality and their being stinky and more grass-y than root-y. But this Vetiver oil deserved to be named ‘supreme’. Last year, I got a nice Vetiver oil from Tabeer Oud, and this year CO’s rocks! It is even better than that of the one I got last year.
2. Natural Pure Aroma (Mr Ziyad)
Ceylon Oud, Ceylon Sandal and so many co-distilled oils! Vintage Ceylon Oud, vintage Sinharaja Oud, vintage Adam’s Peak Oud oils made me remind the year when I got wonderful Ceylon Oud oils by Imperial Oud. As ever, I got mesmerized by the fragrance of Adam’s Peak Oud. Some Oud oils were just average as they lack that particular breath-taking Walla Patta flare. Two Ceylon Sandal oils out of five were hell beautiful. Refined, delicate and superb! So far as co-distilled oils go, Sandal Frangipani and Oud made me its lover. There was Sandal Pine Apple oil that I couldn’t like at all, but strange is the case that this very oil did magic in a blend. Last, Saffron Sandal oil was the only oil of this category that smelt pure to me. Otherwise, paraffin saffron is the destiny of majority of the market. Ceylon Sandal by Mr Ziyad is always great. And so far as Oud oil goes, Mr Ali (Green Silani) and Mr Ziyad are big names, but Mr Ali’s oils are always great, or even more than great.
3. Tabeer Oud (Mr Umair)
Tripura
! If I had missed this Oud oil, this year would have been a hollow year for me. One custom distillation of Burmese Oud oil was an eye-opener for me as Mr. Umair shared everything regarding its distillation, and, as I mentioned above, I UNLEARNT so many modern superstitions about distillation. Second, I duly verified those words uttered by a genuine master by managing some distillations. Pakhang, Meghalaya and Haflong (which was offer in private) were the oils that approved my being on the right track in quest of Oud. But Tripura has no match as the oil is a creative orchestration of artisanal and traditional Oud oil profiles. Incredibly beautiful, simple and pure! Mysore Royale was genuinely Mysore and genuinely Royale. Would that the whole batch were mine! When I compared Sandal supreme by Dr. Parasun and Mysore Royale by Mr. Umair, I always regarded them as the Moon (Sandal Supreme) and the Sun (Mysore Royale). Mysore Royale is the oil distilled from roots only, and the intensity and power of fragrance is evident. Its one gram is equal to ten grams of any other Mysore Sandal available on the artisanal market. Now Mr. Umair has to bring twists, BUT NOT AUXILIARY NOTES PLEASE, in oils to present variety and quality at the same time. Homogeneity can be dangerous.
4. Oud Hindi Global (Mr Azeem)
This guy has an immense variety of Oud oils of all grades. One thing for sure, he has ample experience of distilling oils, and then providing oils to the market. I managed to get three Oud oils, and loved their being bright, resinous and non-soaked. I wish I could get his top quality Oud oils as well. But these a little low quality oils have everything that an artisanal Oud oil is supposed to possess.
5. Forum-based Known Artisans
Putting aside perfume section that has covered the major section of their websites, Oud oils by big names were really stunning. Attar Baikal Gris by FO and Tibetan Musk Attar by EO took my breath away. Baikal Girl has a very strong creative depth in there. As I always refer to beauty and grace, Baikal Girl is grace, and Tibetan Musk is beauty. The way Russian Adam used Oakmoss in BG is up to the scratch. If there were prominent tone of Tibetan Musk in TMA, it would have been all time favourite attar. I missed the depth in current EO’s attar that I experienced in pre 2018 attars by the house. Civet Oud, Ward Sultan Attar etc. exhibit everything but depth that was the hall mark of Sultan Leather Attar (Old One). Layali by AA smelt to me oudy with some scattered ingredients. At least, top notes were less artisanal, but the oil showed somewhat nice heart and base notes. Taif Rose Attar by RPP was nice too. A couple of years before, JK launched an attar ‘Attar Khalifa’ that has more vigour and vitality.
Oud by Habz Oud, I mean Borneo Ateeq is one of the best non-Hindi Oud oils. IT SURELY IS MY NON-HINDI OUD OF THE YEAR. Its being ‘ateeq/ vintage’ is exceptional. So beautiful it is! King Cambodi by Ensar made me recall great traditional Cambodi Oud that won’t lose its sobriety and grace. Ibn Zaydun by AHO was a multi-dimensional Malay Oud. I loved its green forest-y feel that has made it the oil having a comprehensive scent profile. Hawa Oud was again a superb Hindi, free from unwanted sourly tones that are literally unbearable in Hindi Oud. Hawa by AHO and Kalakassi by CO the oils I enjoyed their presence on the wrist. Al Jannah by Habz touched me a lot as I loved its honey notes. Sabah Jinkoh by AHO was replete with almond oil scent. Qazah by HO was an average Cambodi to me, esp after trying King Cambodi, but whenever I compare such Cambodi oil with those of Agar Aura oils, there is no match. Ghazal by HO was a transporting Oud. I found it better than Tigerwood Royale by EO. Maybe it sounds hyperbolic, but BLIND TEST (Eye Opener) can be organized again. Fawaz and Ramah Sandal oils lost their value when I tried Sandal oils by Dr. Parasun and Mr. Umair. Kham Lao and Myitkyina by Agar Aura remained the way AA’s oils had always been. I personally am into dark and deep Oud oils. Both the oils were extremely clean and, maybe, factually proven high grade wood distilled oils. No doubt very refreshing fragrances they had been. But the Burmese Oils I have tried previous years were outstanding, and newly distilled oil by Mr Umair had more shades than this M4k. Anyway, quality is always great.

Non-Hindi Borneo Ateeq by HO and Hindi Tripura Encens by TO are my Oud of the Year. They lack nothing. Absolutely perfect they are.

6. Mr Abdul Jabbar Khan
I can't forget the guy who provided me with two unforgettable oils: Nangarhar Rose and Nangarhar Neroli. He acquired the oils from Orzala and offered them to fellows including me. Well, I have stopped finding any Rose and Neroli oils after getting these oils.

Great post uncle @Rai Munir ! Always enjoy reading your end of the year summaries :)
Sounds like I've missed out on a few, but I have way too many ouds and attars anyway. I've also tried a few ouds from non-vendor distillers (Tabeer Oud / Oud Hindi Global / ) and have been impressed by these

BTW is it Baikal Gris you refer to by Feel Oud (not Girl 🤣)? (it's actually Russian Adam's perfume brand, Areej le Dore)

I had quit acquiring Indian Vetiver oils due their ever declining quality and their being stinky and more grass-y that root-y.
Attar Baikal Girl by FO and Tibetan Musk Attar by EO took my breath away.

When words are placed in the correct order from the thinking mind of a man to the written words of a man....it can change other people's perspective. I perceived very early on, here on Ouddicts, that the posted comments of this highly respected
@Rai Munir were to be trawled through most carefully as you will find the most delightful nuggets of sound information pertaining to this interest in perfume that we all share here...
And because @zakinkazi supplied me Mr Umair number and the review above I have some of this delicious Mysore coming to me. That's how it should always work....trusting complete strangers with my money...on the internet....🤣🤔😇

@Rai Munir
Have you heard any early reviews on Mr Umair Ansari recent releases...

Saqar al Hind is here to testify that Assamese Oud is for brave heart Oud veterans. Its powerful aroma travels afar and stays with the user for long. Bitter chocolatish tone has given a gorgeous touch to the overall effect of the Oud.
