Hi

I just signed up on Ouddict because I finally bought an electric burner and some wood from Jk at Rising Phoenix. Been loving oils and Incense for years but I feel like this is a whole new world I’m jumping into.

At some point(maybe 8 lives from now), I’m going to try and get a little tiny bit of Kyara, but in the meantime, are there any woods out there available right now that will help me get started?

Are there any guides or especially helpful threads on here for burning techniques?

I’m going to keep reading through but it’s a bit overwhelming.

thanks for any help,
Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Feel free to try different levels of heat with each different batch of wood you burn. This can lead to some interesting discoveries. Then there’s the heat-cool-heat-cool-heat method, to tell even more about a particular batch of wood.

Most of the time start on low then go higher in steps, but at least once per different batch, go straight for high.

You can also experiment with different sizes of chips, including pulverized chips.

And know also, that you might want a low heat Mon-Koh session, or fumigate a whole room, but in these cases, certain types of agarwood do better for the job at hand.

awesome! Thank you so much!

Budget is also important to note.

Right now it sounds like you are just getting started - I'd say the 15-20 per g range is a good place to start. The Al hashimi Brunei wood has gotten great reviews.

@Habz786 has nice wood in that range from Sri Lanka you should try.

I'd avoid anything that seems too good to be true. It is.

Off the forum, azman oud on Instagram has good wood.

The nice thing with subitism is that a little goes a long way. Especially with higher grade woods you only need slivers if it's just for monkoh style enjoyment.

Thank you Andrew. I was eyeing that Brunei from Al Shahimi and contemplating the Bulldog from Ensar. My partner is Filipina and I thought she might have more patience for my Oud burning if I mentioned the origin. ;-)

I’ll check out the Habz as well!

There's also a sales forum here where you can get some stuff cheaper. I second the recommendation for Habz and Al Hashimi - all wood I've bought has been fantastic. Same for Imperial Oud. Ish at Royal Bengal Ouds (sometimes) has wood and it's very good quality to price ratio, but I've not seen any in his shop for a long time. JK's wood I've sampled has been great too (and the oud incense are fantastic)

Do you know if azman oud only sells wholesale amounts?

He also has less stock right now with covid going on.

Did you reach out to attar store per chance? I feel like I remember him having something either now or coming soon.

Gentle Oud is gunna run you like 40 a gram. He sells in 12 gram quantities. Instagram is crazy watching folks throw 80 bucks on a coal lol - love it. Wish I could do that. It actually kinda looks like with bigger pieces on coal that the coal actually kinda regulates the heat in some kinda way - like it cools the coal down or something. With smaller pieces it doesn't smell too nice imo, almost like burning. But maybe the bigger the better lol?

I picked up a little package of the Brunei Ghattas from Al Hashimi. Excited to try something that everyone is digging! That with my little starter pack bundle from Rising Phoenix should be fun. I brought up the Filipino oud wood to my girl and she asked her mom about it, since her extended family has some serious land out near Cebu and Palawan. The mom put it to relatives out there who gasped and said, "you know how much trouble we'd get in if we were caught with Palisan*?" (*Tagalog for Agarwood)

Apparently even being in possession of Agarwood is illegal in the Philippines... I wonder how reputable sellers are getting it out.

Yeah that concept of large chunks tossed into a large bakhoor burner perfuming clothes and perfuming a home I also wish I could afford to do that in excess. Agreed smaller pieces seem to ignite at high heat unless they are sinking grade, and you get burning wood instead of pleasant complex simmering resin.

I never quite got how women perfume their hair with it.... it must be expensive.... I see the process happening in East Indian cultures and Middle eastern ,, Like No big deal lets toss $200 USD on the fire.
Everyone doing that can't be wealthy. There must be lower quality woods accessible to them.

The perfumed incense added woods ( NOT Agarwood) that I've tried are with too niche nasty "incensey" and overpowering, sickeningly so. They are assuredly not soothing like gently burning small agarwood chips. But alas, seriously If I were bathing in cash I'd have no problem throwing large agarwood chunks into a pristine living room fireplace set aside for just that purpose... It does seem like it would be overwhelming but in a good way versus that perfumed wood I just mentioned. Its actually customary tradition to burn agarwood in the middle east I cant speak for East Indian culture . Here is an odd link I stumbled upon on the history
history and meaning of oud in the Middle East
