The Aroha Kush sample I got has that smoky note like oud wood being heated on charcoal.

Aroha kyaku smells exactly like burning Oud. I have the 2011 and 2014 batch - I believe. I may be incorrect about the dates but they both have that burning Oud, smoky incense note. Ensar currently has it on for sale but I haven’t smelt the latest batch.

I have a extract from the latest batch. Its beautiful stuff. Dark smokey resinous and slightly charred aroma that smells like the warmth of a campfire in a cold night. There's a calmness to it and it smells as if the scent is being projected by a flame. It's one of a kind.

I’ve smelled a few ouds with that smokey note, but not these particular oils. Always made me a little uncertain about the history of the oud as I have wondered how a smokey smell gets into a steam distilled oil at all. Does this mean that some of the wood was charred on the bottom of the pot or something? Do you all think that somehow the plant itself intrinsically mimics the scent of burning wood and this gets concentrated on distillation?

Not sure to be honest - but I do think the style of distillation plays its part.

Can you name some of the best smokey Ouds you've experienced?

By the way, I did couple Aroha Kyaku with Oud Extraordinaire to see how such a smokey dark oud layers with a sweet syrupy note - the notes seem to take turns making appearances but it's something I'll have to observe more often.

& I've found that when Aroha Kyaku finds itself dried down on clothes - it leaves a beautiful pleasant and unique spicy aroma.

I've found the Aroha d'Afrique to be more earthy and rooty with a slightly sweet Hay like auora - it's not as complex as Oud but more gentle projecting a sense of calmness and stillness. It's on the premium side of Khus.

The liquid isn't as dark as Indian Khus - regional signature I guess.

RBO's smokey oud is by and far the smokiest of all the ouds I've ever smelled. I don't particularly enjoy it though....

I haven't had experience with RBO - but I've always been intimidated by Bengal and Indian Ouds - not there yet as part of my journey. I know they can be on the more daring side. I only have one Indian oud which has a sweet Hay like aroma. Its a journey of patience while aiming to maintain a level of financial resilience.

same, I bought 1g and sold it, it was described as "not very smokey" but it had this smokey plastic scent (it was Sri Lankan)
Saying that, I've not really liked any smokey ouds
How much was it?

I tend to think buying cheap Oud is more expensive in the long run - you end up dissatisfied with a wrong perception of Ouds and their regional signatures and the associations of "sweet", "fruity" or "smokey" become corrupted away from the true beauty of the oils in their most premium form.

I bought some small extracts from a reputable seller and I was surprised to find that I was pleased with all of them. They are all unique, genuine and artisenal.

Obviously, in your case, it could also be that it's not even about the price and more about personal tastes and preferences.

I ultimately ended up with that oil and quickly sold it, it was like an ashtray
