Hello oud lovers,

I have thoroughly enjoyed my early experiences, but have a question about application. I understand that a swipe is enough to examine the fragrance up close by sniffing the wrist, and maybe also to create a small, subtle agarwood aura. But I've wondered how, and much one might apply to create a more perfume-like performance.

Granted, it is the summer here in New York, so my ouds might not be able to live up to their full potency, but I've found several of my ouds to be quite quiet and difficult to notice without going directly to my wrist for a sniff. Maybe the small amounts in sample vials are harder to get full swipes from. Or do you often double-swipe, or apply to palms and cover your neck, clothes, etc? Are there any other tricks to improve projection?

Thanks for your input, I'm looking forward to writing about my impressions of ouds from Habz and Ish (Bengal Oud) when they arrive.

I probably wear too much, but I tend to dip the applicator in, turn the bottle on its side to try and cover as much of the applicator as possible, and roll it over the top of both my hands (one full dip per hand), and do the same for each arm. So, 4 whole applicator usage. I also sometimes put a dab or two behind my ear, I did try underneath my jaw but I noticed that my shirt's collar must have rubbed against my jaw because the collar has a few oil patches/smears - hope it hasn't wrecked the shirt!

Not sure how I'll do it come winter because I'll probably wear a long sleeve jumper on instead of a shirt with the sleeves rolled up (maybe roll up the jumper's sleeves!)

Based on my limited experiences:
- I think a swipe is way too much, even for non-Assam belt ouds.
- There is a very high probability of olfactory fatigue when used that much. It can lead one unable to smell oils after few minutes, no matter strong it is. So I tend to avoid slathering oud too much, minimise sniffing my hands (where I typically dab a pin head about) and putting too close to nose. With oud oils less is definitely more.
- If you are not smelling any oil as long as you did earlier, it is probably time to take a break from it (and similar oils).
- I follow the same things for attars too

So one thing I will mention is that if you apply the oud on your wrist and you're wearing a long sleave shirt it will get absorbed into the sleave and you'll lose the scent quickly.

Also, if you take a swipe on your skin and then apply it to your neck and other places you'll lose it quickly.

Best to apply to a small amount to a location on the wrist or hand that will not be in contact with anything else. On the opposing hand, gently rub in the same spot (not too much) and the scent should last quite some time.

!!! Outa boy. Monster wears. Single handedly Keeping all our artisans in business ;)
I go 1/4 of a single swipe. More of a dot or tiny roll. Trying to recall if I have ever fully smeared a dipstick that was all covered by oil.

That's just insane...!!

now when I reach 1,000 subscribers (in a year from now!) I will have to do 1,000 swipes :Roflmao::Roflmao:

haha :) Well my rationale is that I already have a boatload of samples and bottles and if I use the smallest dabs then I'm not going to make any sort of "dent" in anything and my collection will keep growing and growing :)

Same here, just a tinny dot. :) Well, for now I don't have much oud oil for experimentation or full perfuming myself experience. But even one small dot is enough to enjoy those beautiful scents for hours. Maybe with an exception of the powerful Indian ouds (in my case Habzoud Mukhmil). This one even with a small “dot” feels like I just sprayed something heavily... (at least to me). Though I still need to learn to enjoy the barn note. :Giggle:

hahaha not at all my friend :)
I probably could not do that now without killing myself. I've become quite sensitive to spray fragrances lately since I 95% of the time wear attar and oils to work instead of sprays :)
I am sure some people will end in ER
After 200 sprays of lapidus:Roflmao:
Well done:thumbsup:
By the way i thing Lapidus was one of the best colognes ever made, not so much for what they have currently in the bottle.

I've not had the pleasure of trying an older Lapidus but I have vintage bottles of Fahrenheit, Kouros, Antaeus, Quorum (and many others, though many are discontinued, so can't compare vs. current one) - and they all blow the current versions available out of the water, so I'm 100% certain is the same case for Lapidus too. Three cheers for vintage fragrances!

The best way to make a dent in a collection is to share!
I have a perfume friend that shares more than mother Theresa; her collection is not getting any smaller ;)

That's what I was thinking...

I have vintage bottles of Fahrenheit... Three cheers for vintage fragrances!

Vintage Fahrenheit, reminds me of my brother when he was younger, I picked up a bottle for the memory. I find I wear it a lot.
