Hello my new friends!

I'm entering the second week of this newfound facscination that is artisinal ouddery, and my experience this far has raised a few questions:

Allow me to be brutally frank, oud is addictive. Like coffee. Maybe a bit more . . .

. . . I also found myself relying on wearing oud before 90 minute yoga practice. If I didn’t swipe, then the practice wouldn’t go as well. My mind would wonder more, meditation practice wouldn’t be as effective. I also would find myself waiting for the practice to be over sooner. These stories and similar ones are not unique to me. I didn’t know of oud’s inherent qualities and it’s power and influence on the mind when I started.

Just my 2 cents.

As @Rasoul Salehi so kindly pointed out, Oud doesn't only emit a powerful aroma, it it also has measurable physiological effects that I've experienced first hand. I don't drink alcohol or caffeine, and I am quite sensitive to psychoactives in general. A few nights ago, by the end of a multi-oil, multi-swipe day, I noticed that my heart rate was a bit elevated and it took almost two hours two fall asleep (I generally fall asleep without a problem).

And last night, I was beginning to feel tired but needed to finish writing the draft of an article and email it before heading to sleep. I thought, hmmm, maybe some oud might do the trick, so I swiped a touch of Viet Zephyr and I had a mild buzz going, enough to get me through the task.

But here's where oud might resemble caffeine and create a dependency like Rasoul described. Can anyone else speak to this? I read the lengthy thread about "Olfactory fatigue? Oud Habituation?" but found only a discussion about building a tolerance. To me this is a very important point to be clarified: It's one thing to need more oud to get the same enjoyment or the desired effect, but it is something else to need oud in order to function or in order to enjoy oneself fully.

I suppose these issues have been addressed on the forum before, but I'm very curious to hear if there me be such a thing as "oud dependence." By no means do I mean to suggest that oud and its powers are a threat or a vice. Nature's greatest treasures are must alwyas come with warning labels: "Caution: Powerful."

All the oils in the world will only have a tiny fraction of the magical psychoactive qualities of kynam / kyara wood "resin in the wood the wood is nothing" oldest kynams have no real wood left it has become one almost petrified . In these old woods the oils have long since transformed and what it became is and has the psychoactive properties . These propertiese are only accessable to those that have practiced there kundalini "The Chinese have an ancient saying that one needs an accumulation of 3 lifetimes of virtues before one would have the chance of encountering real kynam, and 8 lifetimes of merit to have the chance to use and appreciate kynam".

The reason one would need so many lifetimes of merit and service to others and a good heart is that it takes that much time to raise your vibration to the point were your kundalini unfolds , it is then in your evolution that you can use the chi giving properties of the kynam and kyara to raise your chi even further , supercharging it if you will , the kynam will help open all the upper chakras and help you open your third eye giving you second or first sight . I practice a hour of yoga and then heat a small sliver of kynam or kyara on a flat burner and deeply smell listning to it not smelling it , i attune to its vibrational resonance and it teaches me in that way , through the breath and torus feild your heart being the center we can vibrate higher and higher with the aid of the agarwood resin , in this way the agarwood is helping to enlighten us , the kundalini energies burn off the lower densities and then were able to hold more and more light . This is why agarwood kynam and kyara is my highest teacher . Sandalwood oil i wear on my heart to cool my chi when i do my energy work so the 2 work very well together one heating and one cooling the chi . The pchycoactive properties are most subtle and not like a conventional entheogen .Agarwood holds its secrets very well and can be used in many different ways and is very different to many people . There is very little of this power in the oils of today though sadly. If i had a kilo of soft kynam theoretically a very phycoactive oil could be made , price today maybe 200k-1 million for a gram

From an Islamic perspective I don’t believe it has any of the properties you speak off. Prophetic medicine is a masterpiece written by Ibn Qayyim RA. And he only dedicated half a page,if that, to Oud.

If I’m not mistaken, burning oud was a way of treating certain ailments and purifying the air.

Is different to many different peoples . It could also be used as a narcotic but i dont use it that way but there are those that do . Believe is one of those things that is the opposition of direct experience . Direct spiritual experience shatters faith in many cases. I can only trasmit my experience as one with with an empty cup
I dont burn kynam or kyara i gently heat it and listen to it , now if i was not empty i could not learn from it . One of the reasons i can learn in this was is because i dont have any beleives , my eyes are that of child like wonder just observing , only in this state are we free to be pure awawness

Hi Tyson,

The reason I bought up the Islamic status is because as Muslims we believe that our Prophet Sallalahu Alayhi Wassalam bought a complete way of life. For us it’s not possible that he would have used something and not known what it’s benefits were. If there was a narcotic element to it, by default Islam would deem it impermissible unless it was proven not to intoxicate. But the jurists would determine that. And again to my knowledge the issue of intoxicating by oud hasn’t come up.

I now see were your coming from , thankyou for explaning to me . Agarwood is a very pure spiritual substance but like anything can be abused or used in wrong ways , to the kogi coca is chewed in a spiritual way but if you refine it , it becomes cocaine and is tainted in its purity and spirituality . even sugar thats refined becomes highly addictive and destructive . Agarwood is the same , it could be used in many different ways . We live in a world of duality after all . Thank you for your perspective and your faith that has aloud me to grow in my awareness and love brother

Nutmeg for example is impermissible according to a large group of scholars. I think it’s also illegal in Saudi Arabia. But we all know you would have to consume huge amounts to get a buzz. So much so that you would probably go numb and puke if your made to consume such amounts that would make you high.

So if something like nutmeg has been reviewed to be intoxicating, then a product which dominates the Arabian perfume culture such as Oud would certainly have been reviewed.

I’m not saying it doesn’t, it’s just not in any Islamic literature that it has a property to intoxicate.

I’m glad you found this alternative viewpoint useful.

Back in history (chinese and indian) agarwood powder and oils were used as medicines.

Yup and that’s what been reported in Prophetic medicine. Medicinal and air purifying. Not oil though, burning only.

Note the point raised by Oudramatic, some frauds do make you think it’s oud wood, but in fact it’s a completely different item which the Hadith is referring to. And that is what’s transmitted by Ibn Qayyim in his book and he covers it in a different chapter.

Yes musk is the most significant perfume.
People would have you believe it’s Oud but it’s barely mentioned, like I say it’s got barely half a page dedicated to it in the prophetic medicine book.

Musk is the fragrance of paradise, musk was used by the Prophet on his shrouds that he wore for Hajj.

The translations are a bit patchy but the overall msg is there.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace & blessings be upon him)
The Holy Prophet made known that agarwood is a distinct item of Paradise in his saying, "The first group of people who will enter Paradise, will be glittering like the full moon and those who will follow them, will glitter like the most brilliant star in the sky. They will not urinate, relieve nature, spit, or have any nasal secretions. Their combs will be of gold, and their sweat will smell like musk. The aloes-wood will be used in their centers.
Agarwood can increase our chi our vibration this then puts us into a blissful state or paradise and why we would glitter like a star, the use of agarwood in these centers can help us all return to these divine states , paradise is through rising our vibration we then enter higher levels of dimentions with an expanded awarness and at thos levels we hold more light so we would look, radiant . pure spiritual highs can feel like a drug so that may be the difference of what we are conversing but drugs only give a shadow of the purity of the feel of paradise

The aloes-wood will be used in their centers ‘as a fuel’

Certainly not to take a person to a higher state.
I have a daily practice of smelling kynam and using it in my ceremonies , i deeply smell it for a hour each day and work with it . I have done this now for over 6 years , .Thats 2200 hours smelling and learning from the kynam and usingit to asist me in raising my chi my light to higher levels of consciousness .. and yes your right the do use it for fuel for there centers but it fuels the chi there light the life force. Be careful then taking anything of certainty

6 years of smelling kynam daily, i'm seriously impressed!
Thanks my friend , i dont want people to think im using alot of it though , i only heat a small sliver on a flat burner on very low heat . With this technique i can reuse the same sliver over and over , maybe a months worth of using everyday before i replace it , in this way a gram can last a year . So then its not very expensive

Rai is absolutely correct. From an Islamic standpoint Musk exceeds everything and nothing comes close.

Secondly Tyson, I believe any good fragrance which agrees with your body/soul uplifts the mood, otherwise why would people apply it, also the second person also benefits from it (as long as they like it) because they also get smell from the person wearing the fragrance. For me Oud definitely isn’t exclusive in this feel good factor. If you tried another fragrance you enjoyed I’m convinced you would find something uplifting in that too.

For me this is the key point, to most people oud stinks, I highly doubt anyone applying oud and then standing next to someone who dislikes the smell would passively up lift them. In fact you would have the opposite effect. Most people complain when they dislike a smell, the statement you hear often is that it’s given them a headache.

In the UK they sell a good mint shower gel, it’s good for a morning shower because of the smell and the mint sensation meaning it’s a fresh smell so it works in waking people up.

To conclude I don’t disagree with you about oud giving you a lift, but I do think any perfume as long as you enjoyed it would give you same/similar effects. Oud doesn’t have any exclusivity in this.

If I can find the section on perfume therapy I’ll put it on the site.
